  10. Just a question, Just got update notice for BBS in a BOX. Will it be
  11. configured to support Hermes menues. The present disk is organized wrong to
  12. be 
  13. used with Hermes without moving all the files to a HD(which is what I did) and
  14.   
  15. batching them up to logical size files. I notice the comment that various BBS
  16. directories will be supported but no particular mention of Hermes. I will send
  17.   
  18. in my order today but with hermes statement on it that it there are not hermes
  19.   
  20. directories, don't fill it.

  35. Again, without Hermes type directory trees, it is almost useless on hermes,
  36. having to set up alpha directorys for each group and making it impossible to
  37. really use by an online user.

  70. He won't release his phone number so that's not a solution. I've tried to
  71. vary the order in which I enter him in the routing file (remember that he
  72. has two entries: HOLD and AGATE). I haven't tried to send any netmail in a 
  73. few days so don't know if it works since the change to reverse order.

  105. until I ran out of room in one of my gliders...(I didn't want to string
  106. multiple ones, either...). Now that I have room again, I would be
  107. interested in seeing a newer probe...BTW, what other stuff have you
  108. written?

  123. Pete, I know how busy you are, but I also know how you like feedback,
  124. so... I have several suggestions for some of your programs which I use
  125. often...
  126.    
  127. For Gliders:
  128. See if you might be able to come up with an interface to add apps. that
  129. looks and works a little more like On Cue's. You migh also see if you
  130. could make it so you could 'install item before selected app.', 'install
  131. item after selected app.', 'delete selected app.', etc. Actually, another
  132. idea migh be a scrolling list (always visible) that has a black, possibly
  133. two pixels wide, section between each app. in the list and at the front
  134. and back of the list. By double-clicking on one of those black sections,
  135. they could add and app. in the location where the line is...It would also
  136. be cool to be able to drag app's around, possibly from one side into those 
  137. black sections to insert and over an app to replace...
  138. I would also LOVE to see a version of Gliders that works with more than 20 
  139. apps, works in the backround, and includes branching based on the current
  140. time or some other thing...

  142. For Archie:
  143. It would be great if you could add a command that would log a user off,
  144. write the user's info to the userlog, as SS does when it has someone log
  145. off, and THEN launch a Tabby compatible app.  This would be very useful to 
  146. me so that I could process my mail after every user logs off, because my
  147. NEC crashmails me several times during the day. Currently it processes
  148. outgoing mail after recieveing mail during a crash...that way it is always 
  149. one session late...
  150.

  281. deleted within the list. If you're not using it you should call my board to
  282. get it.

  365. This explains why I've got programs quitting to RAM since I've started using
  366. System 7.0.  I broke down after last night and slipped FragFighter into the
  367. event chain before a couple of programs notorious for quitting: ATrix and
  368. Epistle.
  369.  But I think part of my problem is that when I was running the BBS on my IIcx
  370. with 5MB under System 6.0.5, I'd UPPED the memory allocation for most programs.
  371.  This is biting back now.  Guess I should just reinstall them all since half
  372. of them show "n/a" as recommended memory and I can't remember what they started
  373. out as.

  466. copy of it anywhere.  I just looked on AOL (America Online) and the only
  467. version there is 0.33.  I have that, and it is unbearably  S L O W.

  664.    Now for the BAD 8-). Hermes 1.7 fixed the problems I was having and has been
  665. running GREAT for about a week now under System 7.0. I did however use System
  666. 6.05 and Get Info to up the System 7.0 Finder to 512K.

  761. Here's the latest on the "Tabby Troubles" front...  Maybe you know the answer
  762. to this connundrum...

  764. My Tabby has now decided to "pick and choose" which mail files it de-arcs and
  765. which mail packets it delivers!  Some files get de-arced as usual, but then
  766. the resulting packets are just left to rot on the hard disk; TabbyNet
  767. DeliverMail on strike?  Sometimes, the received mail file won't even get
  768. de-arced; ArcMail Extract on strike?
  769.   
  770. This is wierd.  Last time a file was not de-arced (yesterday), I used MacArc
  771. to de-arc it manually.  Then I tried to get DeliverMail to deliver the packets
  772. (.PKT files) to the message areas by running a short polling event.  No cigar;
  773. DeliverMail won't touch them.
  774.   
  775. What's going on?   Do you have any idea?
  776.   
  777. This is probably the most annoying situation I've ever encountered with Tabby,
  778. because it seems like nothing's wrong!  Sometimes (about 60% of the time),
  779. received mail files get extracted and delivered just fine.  Someone help!

  950. Informant messages.  If you recall, DeliverMail (I think) was crashing.  I
  951. thought
  952. the messages were too large to be handled by Tabby.  Pete (and others) suggested
  953. (and sent me) Clean-by.  I was doubtful, but I stuck it in there.  Works like
  954. a charm.  Even with my recent 7-day FSP new files posting, handled by Informant.

  1018. If your SURE that the pathname in Request Directories is correct, and the
  1019. file is in fact named "Request Directories", and the caller spelled the
  1020. file name correctly, then the only other option is that you've accidently
  1021. assigned password protection.  Most often the problem is that the caller
  1022. has made a minor typo in the file name leaving out a space or adding one
  1023. or such, but if you're sure they didn't make a mistake, check your file
  1024. name and pathnames again.

  1184. doe not seem to be a memory problem, since programs do not quit to the
  1185. Finder but rather the event quits and returns to SS.  I will try
  1186. FragFighter to see if this makes a difference, but I have noticed that
  1187. there is MORE than 2 meg free when the problems occurs,
  1188.

  1208. fresh copies form a locked master on a 4 meg machine. It SHOULD work, I
  1209. suspect someing this the Classic's ROMs and System 7 & Tabby are adversely 
  1210. affectibg one another.  WHAT that may be I have NO idea!

  1228. system has been running with out a hitch for a year, so this cancels a

  1565. I will not fill it then. I would have to deny TF compatability if I followed
  1566. Hermes "no path abilities" problems. I tried to contact the author to 
  1567. have paths built in to Hermes directories so that I could make it compatable.
  1568. He refused so there is nothing I can do to support it. However, we do support,
  1569. Telefinder, Second Sight, Mansion and hopefully soon First Class as well.

  2218.         DTE-DCE rate.  This allows a BBS program to properly calculate
  2219.         download times even if the DTE-DCE rate is higher.  I'm
  2220. currently
  2221.         working on a patch to RRH's code to allow a fixed DTE-DCE rate.
  2222. &H2     sets software transmit flow control preventing possible buffer
  2223.         overflow, this isn't necessary since the DTE-DCE rate follows.
  2224. &I0     turns off input flow control so XMODEM protocols will work
  2225. properly
  2226. &K0     turns off MNP-5 compression since almost all files are stuffed
  2227. &M4     allows proper detection and control of high speed modes
  2228. &S1     helps overcome 'stupid' wiring of some modem cables.

  2425. Doug, if you think that the lack of HSK is the basis on which to switch to
  2426. another BBS program, go for it. What you will find is that HSK with the
  2427. appropriate modem makes little difference in performance.
  2428.   
  2429. I've been running a beta version off SS that supports port locking with my
  2430. HST for a few months now using software handshaking in the HST, users with
  2431. high speed modems can get up to 1500-1600CPS on zmodem file transfers
  2432. without HSK...
  2433.   
  2434. However since you cannot live without it, you should be happy to know that
  2435. the 2.2 version of SS in beta testing now will support HSK. This has been
  2436. announced in the SS Echo, perhaps you missed the message.

  2445. problems if you have slow hardware.

  2456. consider switching to PC based BBS software.

  2542. Let me attempt to explain what has been happening on my machine.
  2543.    
  2544. We have two events daily, the netMail hour at two and and a two hour event at
  2545. four to poll for mail.  Both events are *almost* exact in the applications they
  2546. run, the second runs a couple more at the very tail end of the event. 
  2547.    
  2548. The machine is running Sys 7 with 4 meg of memory.  All of the Tabby
  2549. applications
  2550. are fresh copies from a locked master.  These events have been running
  2551. flawlessly
  2552.  for over a year, when about 6 weeks ago things went awry with the second event.
  2553.   
  2554. For example:
  2555.    
  2556. The FIRST event runs ALL of the applications without a hitch.  Everything works
  2557. just fine every day. 
  2558.   
  2559. However, when Tabby begins the second event (the 0400 polling event) rather
  2560. than running export, send news, send mail, compress and then Tabby, the machine
  2561. DIRECTLY begins running Tabby and polling for calls.  As soon as the event is
  2562. over, Tabby goes directly back to SS without completing the rest of the
  2563. applications
  2564. listed in the event.
  2565.   
  2566. I got up this morning to verify that the system is doing what the log shows
  2567. it to be doing.  Sure enough, the time came and Tabby polled the four systems
  2568. I poll daily.  I held down the Command key to Callout the event and Tabby
  2569. immediately
  2570. launched back to SS.  I quit SS and FROM THE FINDER I launched the Scheduler
  2571. Application.  This time, howver, the event ran as is should running export,
  2572. send news, send mail, and compress before Tabby, and then it polled all four
  2573. system again.  I assume the event will run the rest of the applications as well.
  2574.    
  2575. So, what do you think?  Ever heard of this?  It is really getting frustrating
  2576. since it is so unusual and Tabby has ran on my system flawlessly for over a
  2577. year.  The ONLY change we have made to the system in that year is that we change
  2578. over to System 7 -- mainly for the disk sharing option.
  2579.    
  2580. Lastly, I took, I believe, Bill Reed's advice and configured Tabby for Finder
  2581. rather than MultiFinder, but it had no effect on the second event not running
  2582. properly.  I really could use any thoughts you all may have.  Thanks!

  2704. Don't think that is the problem.  Before my Usenet Gateway started distributing
  2705. COMP.SYS.MAC.xxx echos to DOS systems I used to get and resend messages up to
  2706. 35K for COMP.SYS.MAC.DIGEST.  For DOS systems he cuts it down to 8K to 10K size
  2707. pieces.

  2733. Mark, the thing that would most likely cause the event to go right back to the
  2734. BBS is if one of the programs got "lost" and couldn't locate the next program
  2735. to launch.  If that happens, it will instead go back to the BBS.  (Or if the
  2736. launch.next file disappeared.  Can this be traced down to a specific program?

  2786. My experience has been that there are about as many Mac BBS's running on MS-DOS
  2787. systems as there on Macs. Not to mention the mixed BBS's, who are probably
  2788. mostly
  2789. MS-DOS systems.

  2792. your CD-ROM.

  2815. of the report.  It pulls info from the nodelist rather than from the messages
  2816. it scans.  For example, *I* as the SysOp would get credited as posting messages
  2817. in an area I never read (COOKING, for example) since one of my users posts
  2818. there.
  2819.  Why not have it pull out the name and node of the actual message poster rather
  2820. than the SysOp?

  2823. saw one?

  2925. removing line feeds...Then you need to open up the Tabby Recieved Mail
  2926. file and put in the path:file for each of the packets...then run

  3002. That was correct when you drop below what the system 'thinks' things should
  3003. be. When I had 7 running (I have since dropped it in favor of 6.0.5) these
  3004. adjustments
  3005. fixed the problems I was having - no more Finder drops or 108s.
  3006.

  3066. Well the purpose of the Origin Counter was not to show specific
  3067. posters even though it can count point contributions, but to
  3068. show boards participating in the echoes. Because your
  3069. name is posted as the sysop does not mean or is intended
  3070. to imply you wrote the message. Merely, that you are the sysop
  3071. and the activity from your BBS.
  3072.   
  3073. We only sold 2 units. I have been notified by the programer
  3074. that no updates will occur unless we sell at least 15 units.
  3075. Based on past sales I would expect the program will
  3076. not be modified. However it meet my needs and I enjoy it.
